About The Artwork

I frequented a lot of art museums as I was growing up, so I think this piece is in part influenced by the works of Kandinsky, Klee, Miro, and Gorky. This painting started off as a very abstract, atmospheric piece. I love working on wood board, it allows me to play with the surface and texture of the piece. Many layers (and scratches) later, I outlined some geometric shapes with India ink and this final piece was created, which I call Seated Lady.

Cristina Getson is an abstract expressionist painter based in Toronto, Canada. After receiving her degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto and working as an engineer, she started taking evening art courses at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her love of expressing herself through painting became a permanent reality as she joined a studio collective, and started to pursue art full time. Working with acrylics, Cristina’s work is imbued with vibrant colours, and influenced by the pull of opposites - smooth and rough, light and dark, indefinite and detailed. It is a dialogue between past and present in order to capture not the physical aspects of a moment in time, but rather the feeling of it. The application of paint is made visible through the brushstrokes and marks left behind; it is a joyful revelling in the materiality of the paint itself. Cristina has exhibited in Canada and across the United States, and was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence at Palazzo Monti in Italy, in 2018.
