ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was inspired by German expressionist painters to do this portrait. I was also influenced by Steve Rose, a Toronto artist, to experiment with neon colors. Usually I mix my own colors from primaries, but Steven encouraged us to paint a neon ground and then to adopt the same style as an expressionist painter to do a self portrait or any other portrait. I was very much inspired by the piece so this is very derivative of the original, but as a self portrait. I felt quite free to play with this. I usually try to do blind contours when I am doing self portraits, so that might be why the eyes are not even. I find it to be quite a good likeness. I hope viewers will enjoy the dynamic colors, the facial expression and will leave feeling lighter in mood.

Cherie lives in Toronto, Canada, a modern, diverse city, but within a neighborhood called the Beach. It has more of a small town vibe where she spends her time walking her dogs on the beach and through the ravine. She's also lived in Northern California and spends summers in Muskoka enjoying the beauty and peace in nature. She has a custom-built studio in Muskoka and a shared studio space in Toronto. Because of her time in California she has been attracted to Diebenkorn and the Bay Area Figurative Movement. She also admires the abstract impressionists and a Canadian group that was active at the same time, Painters Eleven. Their work is intuitive, bold, and energetic.
