The body has been regarded as a machine, as a particular type of possession or thing (a perspective dominant in 20th century medicine). Another metaphor is body as a garden, where the body is thought to be an object—but a natural or organic object rather than a synthetic one (this metaphor has been easily extended to organ transplants as reflected in the terminology “harvesting and implanting organs”). The body as a self suggests that it is a central part of our identity and perception of ourselves. And the fourth metaphor, the body as a sacred vessel suggests that the body is a temple of God.” –Sharon Chirban
