Separate Identities Painting

Nada Velickovic Artists statement 2023. Second generation immigrant - My work deals with the emotional and phycological elements of displacement, separation, detachment , attachment and identity which stems from the effects of the loss of cultural and historical references. I refer to my work as “ After displacement” as I attempt to deal with the after affects of these losses against a back drop of an established cultural and material identity. I use various principles in my work - directness, intention, repetitiveness, and limitation to describe these emotional and phycological elements. I use the material qualities of the canvas to describe these elements of referential loss. I pull over elements of drawing and printmaking within my painting practice in order of me to use form, line,shape and space as a tool to expand the conversation within the canvas/ object dialogue.
