My painting is rooted in my personal experience of the world around me. I do not paint directly from nature, nor in a naturalist vein, but from the individuality of my perception. Beryl Barr-Sharrar is a re-emerging artist who began her professional life as a painter in Paris in the 1960s. She returned to the US to teach painting and printmaking at Mount Holyoke College in 1968, and in 1970 began studying Classical Archaeology at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. She continued to paint, had two one-person exhibitions and several group shows in New York City during this time. However, after receiving her PhD in 1980, she found herself immersed in academic writing and teaching, making time to paint, but not to show her work. Now, after writing two books, co-editing a third, producing almost 100 articles, and being awarded numerous prestigious grants, she has returned to her life as an exhibiting painter with a three-person exhibition in Long Island City in 2016.
