About The Artwork

The scene is familiar to me, located outside my studio window. The village lights shine beyond the roof and tree line reflecting a warm violet into the night sky. On this evening the moons path was in clear view through the trees rising above the roof of the house. I was captivated and compelled to paint the scene before me. This work continues my series of Nocturnes. In the evenings I can switch off the internal light using my small headlamp to light the palette. Placing limitations like these within my practice challenges my thinking and takes me out of my comfort zone. I find I refer to memory and exercise that part of my brain to recall objects, distant light shapes and views seen at other times of the day. I paint areas of the work quickly, aiming to keep brushstrokes to brief suggested marks. Sometimes only a vague, naive depiction of the scene emerges. I'm happy when the artwork generates a sense of nostalgia I hope to engage the viewer to recall night scenes from their own memory.

My current work includes night landscapes. These works extend my fascination with colour and composition. The repeated motif of the night sky facilitates my exploration of colour value. Mixing colour with a minimal palette I paint from observation, in darkness with a small headlamp, placing myself in an uncomfortable viewing position. I impose limitations like these in order to generate creative problem solving utilising memory, recall and intuition. There can be a sense of urgency in painting this way, an attempt to capture in paint momentary glimpses of shapes like distant light in a neighbours window, dark shadows forming unusual shapes. The resulting paintings can be naive and only vaguely recognisable, ideally though the paintings are a nostalgic and atmospheric scene that invites the viewer to recall familiar night landscapes from their own experiences.
