Visiting my niece, I met her band of horses. A mixture of breeds; an Arab, several grade horses and a grumpy pony or two. Of course, horses are always hungry, or so it seems to the newcomer. Horses never miss a beat, "Oooh here is someone who does not know our routine, let's see if we can get her to feed us some more grain...ok everybody lets look really, really hungry!!" I love watching the group jostle for the best position to grab a treat quickly. The boss lady is first with her band behind her. The rule is she gets first dibs to whatever is offered. Got love the natural world, they too have a specific pecking order. This larger work came from an idea that was captured in a much smaller sketch, also available.

Kaija Savinainen is a professional artist whose studio is near Canada’s capital, Ottawa. She earned her Fine Art degree from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, taught by an inspiring group of professors originally from the US, and UK who built that exemplary program. There, she excelled at painting, printmaking and drawing and received several studio awards and a faculty commission. She graduated with Great Distinction and was awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Her Nordic ancestral roots have given her a strong affinity for the environment. Her paintings offer insights into nature’s vulnerability but also, it’s aesthetic beauty. As she states, “Through my art I stimulate the viewer’s sense of where we are going with what nature has bestowed upon us. Nature needs our respect, and care more than ever these days”. Savinainen belongs to The Ten Collective, a group of artists who exhibit annually to rave review in the Ottawa area and online. Her works have been purchased by several universities, and the Alberta Art Foundation, and are in private collections in USA, Canada, Japan, and Europe.
