ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Shell Beach is a painting inspired by a a beach is Western Australia. This beautiful snow-white beach is made up of millions of tiny shells up to 10 metres deep and stretching for over 70 kilometres. There is no sand, only shells! Shell Beach is one of only a handful of places on earth where shells replace beach sand in such a dramatic and picturesque way. This painting is a abstracted vision of that beach. It has the blue horizon above the layers of dusty pale tones that comprise of the shades of the shells. The texture is there to break up the soft tones and to exemplify that it isn't a smooth surface to walk on. The raw linen also symbolises the raw nature of this geographical site.

Caroline Collom is a British artist but shares here time between the UK and Australia. She is currently based in Sydney, Australia working on a new body of work. Collom's paintings hope to expose an inward and outward trajectory of multiple forms through intersecting planes that reveal subtle differences in the illusion of depth. This engages physical interaction as the viewer moves in and out of the work to look for the detail. Abstraction takes abstracts from the existing, and this is the premise of her work and source of her imagery. Taking these shapes and isolating them in a space encourages a dialogue of form that might have once been overlooked: abstract imagery that stands for itself. Proposing to create a space that holds and dominates the room through the means of colour, line and shape.
