About The Artwork

"Site" is part of the series of works dealing with the situation of horrific loss of life and of displacement of the peoples of the Darfur region of Sudan in Africa. My work has always been about the importance of place in shaping and defining one's identity. I've utilized maps and mapping symbols in my paintings and drawings for quite some time. "Site" is a canvas first covered in a USGS map of the Darfur region, (coated with acid free acrylic medium to safely protect from the oil paint). China's outline figures prominently against a backdrop of the somewhat abstracted desert landscape along with the mapping symbols. China played a significant role in what was going on in the region.
