Sitting girl Painting

The interest in the theme of the female nude in painting was generated by theoretical investigations carried out during the master studies. The choice of theme was determined by the desire to reveal the power of suggestion and expressive dynamic of the female nude. Research of the primitive and the essential was one of the elements for which I turned my attention. Through the use of expressionist imagistic sources from the early twentieth century and the discovery of new meanings of pictorial surface rendering, I wish to highlight the radical changes that have occurred in the approach of the female nude resulted from its reinterpretation process. My works are a reminder of the expressionist painterly gestures although certain details are reminiscent of abstract painting. From the progressive and bright voluptuousness of the nudes taken from the mentioned sources now only the attributes of seduction and sexuality (eyes, lips, breasts, thighs) can be distinguished. The rest of the painting is immersed in the mystery of a corpulent fleshy pink, suggestive of femininity. Subsequent interventions and pictorial accidents give the characters the desired expressiveness. Therefore, the paintings are the result of fascination towards the tension between the spontaneous painterly gesture and the figurative content. The still figures are evocative of emotional states resulted from the proximity of the spectator to the illustrated scene. From a technical standpoint, using the contour line, the direct application of colour from the tube onto the canvas, the low concern for nuances, neglecting to finish the painting coincide with the appreciation of simple expressive primitive art that the fauves and the expressionists admired. As the expressionist painting, my works depend on the violent effect of colour surfaces that are closely related and impress the viewer by their overall brightness. The direct nature of the brushstrokes and the pigment are the result of my desire to use as little as possible calculated gestures. From the twentieth century avant-gardes and to new media of contemporary actuality, the subject of idealized beauty was questioned. This topical issue is reflected in my research. The influence of the expressionist painting in terms of chromatic distortion and exaggeration and also in terms of attention directed to transformations in society and in the previous century painting made possible the deepening of the ambivalent features of the concept of beauty.
