About The Artwork
This is my friend, looking out over her view on a hot summer's day in sweltering Andalusia. I really don't know why she spontaneously decided to model for me that day, as she doesn't like people knowing it's her when she does pose for me. I jumped at the chance to paint her and she actually likes this painting – it's one of two! I wanted to capture the view down the valley, the wildness of the plants, her tan lines from planting and weeding in the fields. My aim was to paint a nude in a garden but I wanted to also include the gritty realism of her life in the campo, as a farmer, cleaner and artisan maker. She even made her own swimming pool. This painting is about contemporary women living in a rustic, yet authentic way, off grid, in southern Spain.
