During my MA I began to diversify my practice and move away from stone. During ‘lockdown’ I continued to draw and paint. The work is completed quickly and with minimal or no planning. It is material led and non-conceptual. I like the work to reveal itself to me and I enjoy identifying potential symbols the Unconscious may be using to communicate with my conscious state. I make a frame using tape, compressed charcoal and spray fix. I like being confronted by a delimited space. It’s intimidating and definite. An empty stage I must act upon. I put the paper on the floor and grated charcoal over it. I used a stiff garden broom that was to hand to work some of the dust into the paper. Occasionally id drop the piece of charcoal by accident as it got smaller. It had the curious effect of coalescing the dust in interesting ways so i stated doing it on purpose. I was then confronted with a kind of landscape. I used a type of pallet knife from my stone masonry days that I used to model clay with and inserted it directly into the nozzle of a larger tube of black oil paint, drawing out a wedge of paint. I pushed the paint onto the paper with the tool in a single gesture and repeated the action nine times. I made this in January 2022 and the oil could take months to dry. I have specified a crate for packaging as the oil could crack if the paper is rolled up.
