About The Artwork

My practise revolves around alien archetypes, while also questioning the need to believe. In this series I aim to emphasise the paradox that is the fascination with extra-terrestrials in an age of cultural and biological segregation. I try to illustrate this contradiction by exposing my own alienation in a way that accentuates the similarities between humanity and our idea of otherness, which is significantly escalated by the media and popular culture. I interpret the idea of perpetual isolation by utilising my private space – my house, where I reimagine my everyday life through the eyes of an alien life form. In doing so, the work draws parallels between the alien and the familiar. The interior spaces hold hidden symbols and pop-culture references, with a generous nod to Carl Jung and his perspective on the psychological implications of the flying saucers phenomenon, which has greatly inspired this series.

Bio: I was born in 1997 in Pärnu, Estonia, to a Russian speaking family. However, I have spent most of my life in England. I have a bachelor's degree in Fine Art (Arts University Bournemouth) and a Master's degree in Visual Culture, Curating and Contemporary art (Aalto University). Artist Statement: Contemporary thinking applied to traditional methodology is an essential part of my artistic practice. My approach is hands on, and experimental, primarily using traditional drawing and painting techniques. I work mostly with acrylic paints, or mixed media on canvas or panel board of medium scale. All of my canvas’s are built and stretched by hand. My work is derived from the unconscious – both the ambiguity of the concept itself and its role in my own psyche. I like to utilise automatism and intuition within my works, whereby the content is spontaneous and semi-abstract. I would describe my imagery as dreamy, feminine, somewhat melancholic, yet playful.
