watercolour on black rubber Musical depth, movement and hum resonate almost audibly in this picture. Being left-handed (and Persian!), Darukhanawala’s line-pictures can quite often be read quite productively from right to left, which is probably how this one was painted. Again, the resolution of conflict in the painting (and title) comes to the fore, not least of all in the contrast between the empty, lone sphere on the far right of the picture and the full-bodied one on the left, joined by a bulging, vibrant line that makes the effect of the blue at once psychological, emotional and sexual (three ever-present elements in this artist’s work). As ever, the near-invisible initialling in the bottom left complete the picture: the artist is present but not very visibly. It’s always over to the viewer to take responsibility for the picture, for her/his own initial and then changing response to it. Much contemporary art seeks the viewer’s immediate attention with artistry, dazzling technique and gimmickry. Darukhanawala’s works could not be further from such immediate but short-fuse appeal. They are quiet, unassuming, but they grow on the viewer, creating an attachment over a long period of time – an attachment that is characterized by an ongoing dialogue. The subject of the dialogue can change, it can come from the title or (probably best) it can come from the viewer’s own insides. Dimensions above include frame (unframed: 18 x 65 mm.)

‘My pictures are songs: explosions of energy, meaning and communication. They are spurs for communication with the self and others.’ (Persi Darukhanawala) Persi Darukhanawala’s minimal pictures explore the uncertainty (and so, de facto, excitement) of life (ars longa, vita brevis). With multivalent richness, Darukhanawala’s painting-songs somehow communicate endless, elusive psychologies rather than reproducing already-known visuals. Like the vibrant songs with which they have polylogues, the paintings are life-embracing, positive but equally critical and the product of a spirit in revolt (‘l’homme révolté’). Darukhanawala has attracted sustained interest from academics, critics, individual collectors as well as design houses and hotels. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Art Olympia 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.
