About The Artwork
This work was made over an Edinburgh winter, late into the long nights. My studio is in the heart of Edinburgh's old town, overlooking Greyfriars Churchyard with its history of the grave robbers Burke and Hare, Greyfriars Bobby's dog and Harry Potter connections. It also is the centre of a thriving club and bar night scene and I would generally start the painting around 10pm and work into the wee small hours over the period of a few months. The studio would be completely in the dark other than the light above my head and another set over my palette and canvas. I would paint nightly listening to the nocturnal sounds of the city in the streets below.
