This large watercolour portrait is of one of England's most famous comic writers - Spike Milligan. He is best known for the hilarious BBC radio programme "The Goon Show", and also wrote many books, especially for children. When I first visited him at his home in London I arrived about 20 minutes early. Opening the front door with a face like thunder the first words he said to me were "It's just as rude to be early as it is to be late - sit there and wait!". I sat down with a sunken heart, thinking I had blown my chance. However, at the appointed time he came downstairs with a beaming smile on his face and we had a delightful day as I sketched and photographed him for this painting. This painting is framed in a wooden frame, with a dark cardboard mount, behind glass. Framed, the painting measures 30"x36"x1.5". Unframed it is 20"x25".
