I began painting in 1977 and have progressed to this day in the study of Art and its history. I studied art at Columbus College, Columbus Ga., in the late 70’s to early 80’s, graduating in 1982 with a BFA in Fine Art specializing in Painting and Art history. My focus on landscape painting evolved from my early days in college studying predominantly European landscape painters and through my self-directed exploration of early American landscape painters, namely Hudson River School, Barbizon and American Impressionism. The painting included in the exhibit is an outcome of the above-mentioned study as well as an understanding and experience of the State where I live. The location of the image shows a state park known as Providence Canyon or “Little Grand Canyon.” The canyon’s gullies were accidently created by poor farming practices of the early 1800’s. The displacement of soil cuts through the many layers of silt deposited ions ago from the erosion of the Appalachian Mountains. The area was inhabited by Creek Indians before the land was ceded in the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1825. I have always been visually inspired by the natural beauty and light of the Canyon since my introduction to it in the early 80’s. The many-colored layers of earth were themselves painted across each other by nature’s own brush. I felt compelled to capture this on the canvas. Once a visitor to my studio felt inspired to relay to me a heartfelt message mentioning how they could feel their Native American ancestors in the painting. Therefore, the name I chose for the painting. Spirit of the Fathers.
