About the Artist

Sofigael M

France

Sofigael M., or Sophie-Gaëlle Martin, is a French contemporary multidisciplinary artist, working as a painter, poet, and visual creator.

In line with narrative figuration, her surreal oil paintings - social critiques infused with dark humor - are nourished by pop culture and the visual language of the 1970s and 1980s.

“Nothing will ever be the same again.” Through scenes combining surrealism and symbolism, she explores existential anxiety and captures the tipping point of intimate dramas or collective catastrophes.

Her bittersweet visual narratives, defined by precise lines and vivid, contrasting colors, portray disillusioned figures whose gazes are haunted by tragic events. Resilient, her heroines and heroes nonetheless retain that defiant and sensual “No Future” attitude inherited from the late 20th century.

By confronting her characters with the collapse of systemic or psychological structures that once sustained a form of alienation, she examines the human psyche and its search for meaning. She questions notions of belief and irrationality, exploring liminal states and cognitive threshold spaces, at the boundary of reality, between projection and perception.

Her work has been recognized internationally: in 2025, she was twice listed among the finalists and semi-finalists of the Tartget Painting Prize, and she also received the Certificate of Artistic Merit from the Luxembourg Art Prize twice - first in 2024 and again in December 2025.
