Summer Evening, Vence Painting

This large, warm, figurative interior painting is reminiscent of a time when I lived in Vence, France, up in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean. It’s where Chagall and Matisse lived, after moving from Nice during the war years. Seeking to capture the heat of those summer evenings but also make the painting decorative, I tried to find a balance between depth and flatness. The patterned surfaces hold the objects and figures in space. I love Matisse’s interiors, and this painting pays him a little homage. In “Notes of a Painter” (1908), he said: “Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse elements at the painter’s command to express his feelings.” Please note: This acrylic on canvas is ready to hang. Framing is not required. All my paintings are varnished to add a protective coat against dust. Only the highest quality archival fine art grade acrylic paint is used on the surface gessoed and prepared by myself. Packing: All work is packed professionally using protective compressed foam boards 2 cm deep so that your painting arrives safely.
