Summer Grasses is named for a Bashō haiku as captured in his book, The Narrow Road to the Deep North: summer grasses the ruined dreams of men of war On the 16th of May 1689, the haiku poet Matsuo Bashō set off on a 150-day walking journey from Edo (Tokyo) to the northern Provinces of Honshū, Japan. In 2021, I recreated part of Bahsō's walking journey for ten days. Summer Grasses is one of ten paintings in The Narrow Road to the Deep North Spring 2024 Series inspired by this solo ten day walk in Northern Japan.

Gabrielle is an abstract visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY, where she creates minimalist & joyful works on paper and raw canvas through layered acrylic washes in both subtle and bold uses of color and intuitive mark-making. Poetry often appears in the titles of her paintings. She is inspired by bodies of water – from oceans to bathhouses, the effect of color on human psychology, and the way materials respond to each other. With a background as a designer and user researcher, Guthrie frequently think of the context and impact of her paintings while she creates. She hopes to evoke a sense of joy and calm reflection through her work while embracing the surprises and imperfections that emerge during her creative process.
