" I like to be challenged and I love the process of painting and making artists prints. When I paint, I leave visible layers of paint and marks and sometimes drips of paint. Hopefully, the viewer is aware of the texture of the paint and the power of the artists brush on the canvas. Printmaking is exciting because of the surprise when I pull the newly made prints off the press and see the results of the ink on the paper. I abstract and simplify forms and interpret color. I like to create a mood in my work. I am interested in paintings that are not ordinary. I tend to work in a series. Some of my past serious themes have been reactions to gun violence and the need for us to be gentle and calm in the face of our sometimes nerve-wracking environment. My abstract and realistic paintings and prints are inspired by nature and the world around us. " Harriet Sobie Goldstein grew up in Brooklyn, New York and lives in New Jersey and Florida. She began her art studies as a child at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and was encouraged by her cousin, William Sharp, a noted illustrator. At Hunter College of the City of New York, Ms. Goldstein majored in art taking as many art classes as she could mange. While at Hunter, she studied with the minimalist sculptor and painter Tony Smith, who noted a gift for color in her painting. Ms Goldstein is a versatile artist who has been interested in painting and printmaking- abstracts, landscapes, and figurative art throughout her career starting at Hunter. She is moved by Nature and sometimes troubling current events. Ms. Goldstlein continued her art training at art schools in NY and New Jersey, including the Art Students League and exhibits her artwork in galleries throughout the New York Metropolitan Area and Florida.
