Everyday for 7 years I would walk through my home and see this view, the picturesque view was almost commonplace. Yet, sometimes in the early evening an amazing sunset or after glow would stop me in my tracks. I don't know that I've ever seen sunsets this beautiful anywhere else. The closest would be in New Mexico where the sky seems so close that you feel a part of the colors or clouds. But the view of the bay with it's ever changing array of amazing sights and of course the Horizon line trailing away over the ocean never ceased to amaze me. This painting was inspired by one of those memories and I've only seen the sky turn Technicolor twice before like this and I tried my best to capture it on canvas and after 18 days of countless renditions with a palette that was the most complex I've ever mixed I feel i came close to what I saw that night. The soul of this painting lies scattered throughout the transitions of color that seem impossible to have occurred naturally...but they came to life on this canvas and I hope it speaks to you....enjoy.

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
