ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Sunshine in August express the bright, shining light of summer - a light that mirrors our own soul brightness. The tall vertical abstract composition feels elegant and inspiring. Organic shapes and particles rise upward against the complimentary blue green background. There is a sense of space like one finds in a natural landscape. The central yellow gold light radiates illuminating the surrounding orange, red and maroon. There is a certain drama and passion which elicits optimism, hope and joy. The artist uses a unique patina technique where layers of fluid paint are applied, dried and then washed away. This creates an organic and natural effect resembling what could be a natural phenomenon like a sunrise. The canvas has a light texture of gesso and sand which adds a sensual tactility to the work – a dimension of art that invites the viewer to “feel” the piece. The edges are left painted revealing the creative process.

Perhaps my appreciation for abstraction comes from living in Canada surrounded by mountains, lakes, sky and forests. Nature continually presents me with soothing colours, exciting designs, delightful patterns, intriguing patinas and infinite space. Nature presents light, dark, shadows and movement which evoke emotions of mystery, wonder and love. My goal as a painter is to use nature’s abstract elements like colour and space to capture a particular feeling, a feeling of unity, passion or peacefulness. I strive to create painterly abstractions that mysteriously resonate with my deeper self and hopefully with the soul of the viewer. I believe art is a way to communicate one soul to another.
