ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Painted life-size this highly detailed painting of a common carder bumblebee is given a 3d feel by a gentle use of shadow play. The piece is one in my series 'Sweet Spot' which celebrates the incredible diversity of UK pollinators and a call to give them space. The series was inspired by attending the Pollinator Festival in Bristol Botanic Gardens. Most people know about bumblebee and butterflies but many flies, beetles, moths and wasps are important pollinators too. In this series I wanted to celebrate this incredible diversity. To create an individual connection to these tiny heroes. By painting them on traditional gesso wood panels, which take several days of careful preparation and finishing, with its beautiful porcelain-like surface I wanted to invoke a feeling of jewel-like preciousness to each and every one. A small hole in the back of the panel allows the painting to be hung on the wall on a nail, alternatively it can be displayed free-standing on a surface.

I am a fine art acrylic painter based in Bristol. Living and working in an urban environment has shaped and influenced my practice. My main focus is the ongoing competition for space between an ever-expanding human population and their animal neighbours, an evolving intricate jigsaw. I’m fascinated by the meeting point between these two worlds, examining the cross connections. My paintings are highly detailed, presented on simple or minimal backgrounds and strive to capture a sense of quiet beauty, allowing the viewer time to pause and reconnect with nature. I work on wood panels, created by myself and my father. The panel shapes themselves are influenced by the shapes, architecture and negative spaces of the man-made landscape and are used to create a stage my creatures can interact with. I have exhibited in London, Glasgow, Dublin, New York, Toronto, Singapore and Hong Kong. In 2009 I won the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year- British Mammals and in 2016 was shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year.
