This painting is based on The Birth of Venus by Botticelli c.1485 and has been a favourite of mine since my teenage years. I had painted this subject before when I was an art student however this time I have incorporated more changes yet retaining the sense of the iconic Italian Renaissance painting. Supplied ready to hang in a contemporary gallery wrapped style - no framing is necessary because the image is carefully extended around the outer edges. The stretcher is particularly robust as it is of a composite construction. The painted surface is fairly smooth, professional grade oil paint over a superior oil primed linen canvas.

I have long been fascinated with painting water and nudes in water. I find the reflective properties, the movement and the distorting qualities of water provide me with a wealth of challenges. I find that although my aim is always to produce a high degree of realism in my paintings I am constantly using sequences of abstract shapes to achieve an effect. "Peter's work has been seen around the world. In his paintings reflections of both classical and modern interpretations can be found. With superb and interesting techniques he infuses a harmony between natural realism and the painted surface creating subtle yet dramatic imagery. Influences can be identified from many periods of art history. In particular the realism of the late nineteenth century and the photo-realism of the twentieth century."
