ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Las Vegas is a seedy, dirty place - at ground level at least. But look up, and there are beautiful aspects of retro Americana such as vintage neon signs. The Dirty Flamingo combines two of my great loves - Rothko’s colour field paintings, and Hockney’s well observed California. The sky is painted in thin layers of oil mixed with turpentine and linseed oil to give the colour an exquisite glaze. This of course dominates the painting. The Flamingo casino creeps into view, causing the onlooker to crane their head upwards as though walking down The Strip. The painting is very much two techniques combined to create one entity - thin, translucent big sky, and heavy stokes of oil to represent the dirty, sand-blasted casino.

I’m pretty sure I could draw long before I learned to walk. Art for me was my calling, my passion and as a creative director, it’s also been my job. The great thing about advertising is the amount of world-class creative people you meet, from fellow ideas people, to illustrators, writers, photographers and film makers - pioneers who channel every waking moment in perfecting their craft. It’s inspiring working with people who care about every single pixel, stroke, sound and word they put their names too. I’ve been ludicrously spoilt in my career - travelling extensively and soaking up the culture in some extraordinary places. So, when in 2019 we were lucky enough to be given the chance to relocate from London to California, we grasped the opportunity. The astonishing light and picturesque scenes around our home in Los Gatos, lured me to my paints - and I began to feverishly produce canvases in every spare moment I could muster. I’ve evolved a style that distances the viewer from the subject, applying incandescent California light to London greys. Drawing heavily from my graphic design background, I use a strong graphical element in my composition and the finest materials available. In September 2021 I left my job to make the work I love, and bring joy into people’s homes.
