We ignore truths for temporary happiness, we don't like to admit the hard truths about life. People only truly appreciate others after they're dead. Then everyone you know and love will start to die and that goes for everything else too. There are three kinds of truth, Absolute or objective truth, Relative or conditional truth and Personal truth. All of them either hurt once it is out or we accept as it is the fundamental nature of reality. Perhaps because it's life changing. Many people are quite comfortable with their life as is. Others may worry that it will only make matters worse. A 2022 study found that the public substantially underestimates the degree of scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change. Studies from 2019–2021 found scientific consensus to range from 98.7–100%. Humans have caused major climate changes to happen already, and we have set in motion more changes still. However, if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today, the rise in global temperatures would begin to flatten within a few years. Temperatures would then plateau but remain well-elevated for many, many centuries. There is a time lag between what we do and when we feel it, but that lag is less than a decade. While the effects of human activities on Earth's climate to date are irreversible on the timescale of humans alive today, every little bit of avoided future temperature increases results in less warming that would otherwise persist for essentially forever. The benefits of reduced greenhouse gas emissions occur on the same timescale as the political decisions that lead to those reductions.
