New Sincerity Shallow metaphysical space… The Heliotrope was an instrument used by surveyors when triangulating points over great distances. The instrument used reflected sunlight to create a target for surveyors visible up to 200 miles distant. This painting was inspired by my meditations on the brevity of life and how the short time that we are here in this seemingly concrete and very real world is made to feel somehow larger and possibly connected with a greater reality by the fact that we will all at some point die. This knowledge makes each day a miracle. The tree is painted in what appears to be a sort of a casual, loosely defined sculptural space. It is painted with an ephemeral quality seeming to dissolve before our eyes. The tangible and intangible contrast creating a kind of shallow spiritual space.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
