This original oil on canvas painting is a luminous summer scene of lower Taughannock Creek, located in Ulysses, NY, just outside of Ithaca NY, along Cayuga Lake. It's the second large format piece I've painted based on this location. It's painted in a realist style in brown, white, green, yellow, violet, blue, old, cream, and gray tones.

This painting was inspired by frequent excursions along Cayuga Lake to visit Americana and Thirsty Owl Wineries. When driving north on Rt. 79, it’s only natural for a landscape painter to stop and visit Taughannock Falls State Park, as the park offers nearly two million years of fascinating topographic inspiration.

Taughannock Falls in Ulysses, New York, has a drop of 215 feet--the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains, and was created by Mother Nature during the Ice Age (Pleistocene Epoch), which ended around 11,700 years ago.

In geological terms, the area is defined as a “hanging Valley,” which is a valley carved out by a small tributary glacier that joins with a valley carved out by a much larger glacier. A hanging valley is a shallow valley carved by a small glacier and thus the elevation of the valley floor is "hanging" high above the elevation of the valley floor carved out by the larger glacier.
