‘Tears of the Sea’ 25.5” x 37.5” framed, mixed media assemblage. This artwork was created by found object sculptor Lynn Dodge and mixed media artist Karen Haub. The Channel Islands marine debris volunteers are stewards of the ocean who collect and remove plastics and trash that endanger and kill marine and island life native to Santa Cruz Island, this is some of the debris removed from Santa Cruz Island, which acts as a trash barrier to the Santa Barbara and Ventura coastal areas. Due to its position in the current flow of the Pacific Garbage Patch, a lot of plastic debris littering the ocean washes up on the south facing side of Santa Cruz Island endangering and killing native birds, sea birds, marine life, and island foxes. Inspired by the landscapes of Coastal California, Karen enjoys spending time outdoors, painting in oil, and considers her plein air work to be a tribute to the enduring, ethereal essence of the natural landscape untouched by industrialization and urban sprawl. The brushwork, mark making, and dripping techniques she uses in her mixed media studio work suggest the passage of time, and is a poignant reflection of her concerns about the delicate balance between humanity, technology and nature. Karen Haub is a Southern California based mixed media artist drawn to intuitive landscapes and figures. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and has shown her work in numerous galleries in Southern California. Karen has sold work throughout the U.S. and internationally since 2014. The brushwork, mark making, and dripping techniques she uses in her mixed media studio work suggests the passage of time and is a poignant reflection of her concerns about environmental conservation and the delicate balance between humanity, technology and nature. The collaborative work that she does with found object artist, Lynn Dodge is focused on bringing awareness to viewers about the destruction of the environment and environmental issues we all face as inhabitants of a dying planet. The earthy, textural elements of each painting combined with the upcycled, found object elements, bring a keen awareness to the viewer that our planet is covered with discarded objects that pollute our environment both in the manufacturing and in the disposal of them.
