The Italian way of life, the leisure and dolce far niente of young people relaxing on the grass in the park in Rome- these inspired me to depict the lifestyle that I admire so much. In the middle of the crowded and chaotic city, Romans stroll and picnic. I was interested in capturing the subject in bright light in the background, as it is so often in 18th and 19th century landscapes. The middle ground is alternately sunny and shaded, and the silhouetted tree in the foreground gives the composition depth and drama in a somewhat Japanese way. I hope that you feel the relaxed and laid-back calm of the Italians when you see this painting, if only for a little while.
