About The Artwork

This watercolour painting was inspired by the recent unveiling of the new version of the Indian Emblem, which is based on the Lion Capital of Asoka at Sarnath. The new emblem features more ferocious lions, their teeth bared, which symbolically bespeaks the muscular Hindutva nationalism represented by the current Indian government. The title of the work is based on the claim of the Indian finance Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal that India is set to be a 30 trillion dollar economy in 30 years. Compositionally, the work juxtaposes the muscular nationalism of the roaring lions on the Indian emblem with the vocarious increases in tax burden placed on the Indian citizenry. The autorickshaws, skyscrapers, and slums being consumed by the lions on the pillars of Sarnath are the concrete expression of the abstract idea that the government's economic policies are akin to the plans lions may be expected to have for lambs.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website www.Middlebrowse.com
