About The Artwork

‘The Ancient Reptilian Man’ 85’x56’ Oil on canvas was in the last Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2018, a triennial state wide juried exhibition and also at the Art Kauai Show. I met Kahuna Ed through a couchsurfer (I was hosting) who requested to see him. They connected on a deep spiritual level and the conversation they had about mystical, shamanic topics inspired me to paint a portrait of him. Interesting enough he was giving me permission to take pictures of him which he never did before. I was honored. This piece took me 9 months to finish In ancient times the ‘dragons of Hawai’i are known as protective deities, sometimes as shapeshifting threats. To those who understand the culture, these mo‘o (supernatural lizards) are more than a myth. Today’s Hawaiian elders like Kahuna Ed confirm that these creatures can grow 12 to 30 feet long. In ancient times the people thought the mo’o was a guardian-spirit god who is protecting people and places if you respect the land.
