Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

“To me, the blues is an infection. I don’t think it’s necessarily a melancholy thing; the blues can be really positive and I think anyone and everyone can have a place for the blues. It need not always be a woeful, sorrowful thing. It’s more reflective; it reminds you to feel.” –Mike Fleetwood

Everyone gets the blues from time to time. Life isn’t always exciting or full of laughter; sometimes it’s dull and sometimes it’s just plain difficult. I think artists tend to embrace the blues because, out of it, comes a great song or a heart wrenching screenplay.

To be honest, some people are so “up” all the time that I just can’t stand to be around them– it doesn’t feel real to me. If I’m feeling the blues, I’m going to be honest about it. It’s just the way I am.

Typically, we don’t want anyone to have negative feelings because we don’t want people to feel pain. But, pain is part of the process, I think. We need to allow people to feel sad, to angry, to frustrated. It’s not that we can’t be there to help, but we don’t need to fix them.

One thing I love about the soul of an artist is the ability to feel deeply. I want to experience life in all of it’s joy and beauty and sorrow and passion. I want to FEEL! That means I experience pain full on, but it also means I can experience joy more fully!

So, I think this painting is about feeling and giving yourself permission to be down from time to time. It’s okay to feel it, just don’t stay there! Joy and happiness are waiting for you too!
