ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Here I wanted to capture the beauty of a studio I had in Wellington, New Zealand. The art studio, where I lived during an important stage of my career, was covered with the most peculiar collected objects over a history of artists staying within its walls. There was a sea of Persian rugs, cushions, tapestries, every strange object you could conjure. To these I added some of my own. A vase, the books, the throws. The woman reclining is comfortably reading a book of fairytales in the muted daylight. The reading material is a storybook that influenced me artistically from a very young age with its mythological tales of far off lands and elegant illustrations.

A painter, illustrator, and writer, Prinn has been self-taught and passionate about art, nature, and storytelling from a young age. Loving to draw from life and the imagination, she studied both masters and alongside painters whom she admired. Awarded a generous scholarship, she went on to complete a B.F.A. in Painting at The Savannah College of Art & Design. Prinn moved her professional career to her ancestral home of New Zealand, finding success exhibiting in group and solo shows alongside portrait commissions and book illustration. Here she was selected finalist for the prestigious Adam Portrait Award two years consecutively, going on to tour nationally through The New Zealand Portrait Gallery. Having distinguished herself in portraiture, she extended her work to Europe, engaging with clients in Germany, Italy, and Spain. Alongside her realist work, Prinn executes symbolic, uniquely stylized drawings in pen and ink that have become an index to her mythological world 'The Islands of Niljora', which she slowly publishes and reveals. Most recently her work in this style was shortlisted for The Parkin Drawing Prize presented with The New Zealand Academy of Fine Art. Her first illustrated book of 'Niljora' is held in The National Library of New Zealand and The Otago University Libraries.
