ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece was created around early 2022 when the UK was hit by a major storm called Storm Eunice. I was in my studio on the day of the storm and I could feel the whole building shake and quiver around me, conjuring a strange and unsettling emotion. It is this that I tried recapturing, using poetry as a means of describing the sensation of imminent doom, whilst using bright, bold colours to contrast what I wrote and create a jarring effect. The scrappiness of the building drawn on the bottom right reflects the fragility of the buildings we live in and our own bodies, reminding us of the power of nature and our own mortality.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
