About The Artwork

While I was deciding which one of these vessels to choose to paint in the set up that I had arranged, I was moving them around in the light. When I saw them together in this position, their combined shapes seemed to work perfectly so I immediately picked up a canvas and started painting. At the time I was going through a crisis: a close relation was in a psychotic episode. During the painting of this piece, I had so much support around me, friends and family checking in, as well as coordinating with other dependents myself, I realised that these objects perfectly symbolised my situation: of multiple conversations talking about the chaos around me. The jugs are all stoically facing the bowl, about to fill it with support. The process of painting itself was calming and meditative, the composition reflecting my life, both literally and metaphorically: the position of the objects captures that solidity that we experience when we are lucky enough to feel the benefit of belonging to a caring community. At the same time it illustrates the darkness of the unknown so close behind us; the long angles of the shadows echoing the drama, but with that beautiful light of hope emitting from the gathering...
