Victoria Horkan

About the Artist

Victoria Horkan

United Kingdom

Victoria Horkan is a British contemporary artist known for her richly textured, expressive paintings that explore memory, imagination, sanctuary and our emotional relationship with the natural world.

Working predominantly in oils and mixed media, Horkan builds highly tactile surfaces through layers of colour, gestural movement and sculptural organic forms. Water is a recurring presence within her work — sometimes suggesting freedom and weightlessness, at other times the feeling of being submerged or overwhelmed.

This relationship with imagination has deeply personal origins. Growing up within a turbulent home, Horkan discovered the ability to retreat into private imagined worlds, becoming absorbed by colour, pattern and shape. What began instinctively as a form of escape has gradually become an important language within her paintings.

Forms resembling petals, coral, foliage, wings and underwater life emerge and disappear across the canvas, yet Horkan deliberately leaves them unresolved. A flower to one viewer may become a coral reef, a landscape or a half-remembered place to another.

Her background in textile design can be seen in her fascination with surface, repetition and materiality, while her distinctive use of intense colour brings energy and optimism to the work.

Horkan's paintings have been collected internationally and her work has been selected for numerous curated collections on Saatchi Art. Rather than telling the viewer what to see, she creates paintings that invite them to enter and discover something of their own.

“I paint the places we escape to in our minds — somewhere between memory, imagination and the sea, where colour becomes a kind of sanctuary.”
