About The Artwork
This style resulted after a month-long residency at Vermont Studio Center. One of the Visiting Artists there suggested I try working in a manner similar to the way the Japanese seventeenth century poet, Basho is reputed to have created his poems. I just sat in front of the painting - already painted grey - and waited until I was no longer thinking about making a painting. Then, I picked up my brush loaded with off-yellow paint and let the brush go where it wanted. I titled it "The Dance" because the composition is similar to a painting by Matisse of the same name.
