The Daydreams of Monarch Butterflies Painting

This painting is about the search for identity for 2nd generation immigrant young female, who is caught between two cultures. I portrayed an immigrant youth caught in the moment of daydreaming while in the setting of her everyday life. The subject in the painting is on the line between the culture of her national heritage and the new culture she is in, as she has to constantly question herself how she sees herself and how others see her. The monarch butterflies represent her national heritage as well as her immigrant experience. These butterflies are known for migrating from Mexico to the U.S and going back to Mexico during the winter. When they hibernate in Mexico, they use the very same trees their previous generation have used. This shows how our past and cultural background is still embedded in us, even though we also keep constantly changing as we adapt to a new culture.
