I experienced synchronicities with the number 13 which led me to explore its history and meaning. Experiencing these synchronicities felt like I was being guided towards my full potential. The number 13 has many meanings, including creation, the afterlife, and transformation. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the number 13 was associated with the afterlife, as it represented the 13 stages of the journey through the underworld. 13 circles are used to create the fruit of life which is a sacred pattern used to represent the origin of creation. In the Tarot deck, the Death card is often associated with transformation, change, and rebirth. The Death card can also represent the end of a cycle or phase, as well as the passing of physical life. The completion of this piece correlated with the unexpected death of a close family member and the birth of my son, Merlyn. To me the card represents the illusion of past and future ideals. The past dies as the future is born, and yet somehow in-between this, we are able to meaningfully engage with the present to shape our lives and the world around us.

I am a welsh artist, based in Cardiff. As a teenager I became interested in tattooing and I went on to complete my tattoo apprenticeship on the east coast of Australia. I was interested in traditional American tattoos due to the bold graphic aesthetic which reminded me of ancient Egyptian art. I went on to study fine art at Cardiff school of art and design. I continued to pursue a link between the tattoo and fine art, exploring many ways the skills and concepts could be transferred over into contemporary painting. This obsession led me down a unique path of discovery where I have intensely experimented with different paints, tools and surfaces. I now make my own paints from natural materials, sometimes foraging for tree resins or even extracting tar from birch bark. I use unconventional methods in my art such as weaving jute twine through the canvas or using a punch needle to create texture. I douse my paintings with petrol and set them on fire to allow them to come to fruition organically through a process of destruction and creation. This process is emblematic of death and rebirth, which is now a main focus in my practice.
