I'm inspired by my surroundings. What I see when I'm out. Being attuned to my environment. I've always had a slightly humorous approach to certain subject matter and name the paintings likewise.

Sam Luff is a contemporary English artist whose work emerges from an intuitive, self-taught approach that combines technical and emotional depth. His surreal, narrative-driven compositions, expressive or exaggerated figures, and bold, vibrant colours create worlds that feel deeply symbolic and evoke a sense of storytelling that draws viewers in. Luff works primarily in acrylic, for the immediacy this medium offers in capturing the moment. Increasingly, he paints on salvaged materials, quietly criticising disposable culture while creating beauty from what was once discarded. Luff’s artistic practice has evolved outside formal training over the last twenty years. Originally trained in screen printing, his experience in the creative industry gave him a lasting appreciation for colours and visual production. His earliest paintings were steeped in traditional ideals and reveal a meticulous approach. Careful brushwork in oil and controlled blocks of colour constructed imagery and narratives set within convincingly realistic worlds. Reflecting on the turning point in his practice, Luff recalls, "It was a voice that told me to let go”. From that point onward, his work moved away from rigid formalism towards a more intuitive expression of both inner and outer worlds. He abandoned preparatory sketching and began using acrylic, searching for a process that felt more immediate. Constantly seeking change, Luff deliberately avoids remaining in a state of creative comfort, believing that artistic growth ceases when stability sets in. Recent works have explored the addition of collage and screen printing.
