About The Artwork

A painting about money. The image of the eyes of The Queen from a Twenty Pound Note is made solely from the quotes of someone living on the breadline on a London sink estate. The letters slowly start to disintegrate the more desperate the story becomes. The 'text image' is pierced by abstract shapes metaphoric of shards of broken glass and London's newest symbol of wealth The Shard. The green is representative of money as well as envy. This is the text that makes up the image: WE MOVED TO THIS ESTATE FIVE YEARS AGO ITS A DUMP THE FIRE ENGINES AND THE POLICE ARE ALWAYS ROUND NEARLY EVERY NIGHT WE HAD PRAM SHEDS BUT YOU COULD NEVER USE THEM THERE WERE ALWAYS FIRES IN THEM PEOPLE WERE USING MINE AS A DUMP FOR NICKED STUFF I FOUND A TELEPHONE ANSWERING MACHINE IN THERE ONCE THE WORST PROBLEM WHEN WE FIRST MOVED IN WAS THE BREAK INS THE FRONT DOORS ARE A PIECE OF CAKE ALL YOU NEED IS A PLASTIC CARD TO OPEN THE LOCK WE WERE BROKEN INTO SIX TIMES IN THREE YEARS TWICE WE DISTURBED THEM MY TEN YEAR OLD FOUND THEM EVER SINCE THEN THE GIRLS HAVE BEEN REALLY NERVOUS IN THE NIGHT THEY LEAVE THEIR DOOR OPEN SO I CAN HEAR THEM IF THEY CALL ME ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CHILDREN NEEDED A LOT OF CLOTHES ONE OF THEM LOST A SHOE IN THE MARKET AND I COULDNT FIND IT SO THAT WAS A NEW PAIR THAT WAS NEEDED I WENT TO THE SOCIAL SECURITY TO ASK FOR CLOTHES BUT THEY WOULDNT GIVE ME A THING WHEN THEY REFUSED THAT I SAT DOWN AND CRIED WERE GETTING LOW NOW WE’VE GOT FOOD FOR TODAY BUT THERES NONE FOR TOMORROW LAST WEEK WE RAN OUT OF MONEY FOR THE ELECTRIC METER WE HAD TO HUNT ROUND THE HOUSE FOR PENNIES TO MAKE UP FIFTY PENCE THIS WEEK I STARTED THINKING OF THINGS I COULD SELL

Mike Edwards is an established artist well known for his portraits made of text. New bodies of work show Edwards evolving from his recognised style, developing an increasingly sophisticated approach to painting. Some works retain a typographic aesthetic, whilst others incorporate painted neon, abstract expressionism and traditional landscape painting to produce a complex and energetic dialogue between the old and the new. Edwards has exhibited extensively, including three solo shows, and his work is in collections around the world, including those of Sir Bradley Wiggins, Imelda May, and the late publisher Felix Dennis. David Bowie signed Edwards’ unique typographic portrait of Aladdin Sane - which went on to raise phenomenal funds for charity at auction. His portrait of Lord Attenborough is on permanent display at The Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts, University of Sussex. Edwards' work was also included in Gilles Peterson's book 'Broadcasting in a Pandemic', a cultural documentation of a year in lockdown. An exceptional painter, Edwards started out as a professional artisan artist before developing his own body of work. Projects have included a stage set for rock band Blur and producing commissioned artworks for Bacardi, Budweiser and Urban Outfitters. Edwards continues to push boundaries in new paintings currently in progress in his studio in central Brighton.
