When you don't have much time to paint in one go and when you live in a part of a city where models are hard to find, you are bound to DIY. This painting uses a body pose as model from which both a willingness to take a risk as well as caution emanates. The body, as metaphor of our material, physical existence, cannot but be the translation of emotions that become visible through posture and facial expression. Using broad brushstrokes, purposefully omitting details, the 'raw' emotions or rather: the battle between the two emotions 'going forward' and 'holding back', should come forward as less hampered by searching for clues as possible. Acrylic is a medium that is fairly unforgiving: it dries fast and requires that the artist is well connected with what he or she wants to express. The human body amazes me for another reason: in an era where 'the singularity' according to some is being approached rapidly, in a world where man has to prove his relevance, juxtaposed with learning machines, a.k.a. AI, the human body and its power to express or represent emotions will be the canvas on which humanity will be able to survive. I hope the viewer, perhaps slightly uncomfortable with both pose and emotion of the subject on the painting, will be able to appreciate how versatile we humans are. A prerequisite to our survival, not so much as an individual, but all the more so as a race.

I lived in Tamilnadu for almost 15 years, my (late) wife Jansi is Tamilian, our twins for 50%. Tamil is the language of nearly 70 million people in and outside India. Tamil is the language of poets, its verses are well-known across many borders and there isn't an Indian state that produces as many new songs every year as Tamilnadu does. In short, when thinking about a name for my art enterprise, கலை ('art') immediately came to my mind. I draw and paint since a small age, but only since 2002 I have been taking it more seriously. When Jansi died in 2014 I was down and out for a year, but in 2015 while putting myself and our twins together again, my art work started to take me on a strong flight to where I am now, where I draw and paint so much that I dare call myself an artist.
