This painting depicts the Fates, the three sisters who control the thread of life for every mortal, in a moment of relaxation and harmony. The sister holding the thread represents Clotho, who spins the thread of life. The sister smiling mysteriously represents Lachesis, who measures the length of life. The third sister, Atropos, who cuts the thread of life, is absent from the painting, suggesting that she has given the mortals a temporary reprieve from death. The yarn of life that they twist and smile at is a sign of their whimsy and experimentation. The background shows a peaceful and beautiful landscape, symbolizing the balance and order of the cosmos that the Fates maintain.
