About The Artwork

This colorful and expressive oil painting enters the space of a garage where the ordinary parts of life become something extraordinary. A palette of soothing hues capture the artistry within this space. A vintage ladder, a collection of containers and a well worn barrel start to invite inquiry. Dreamy blues and violets transform the clustered corner of stacked buckets and things, while the warmth of a creamy orange floor inspires a welcome gesture to stay awhile and look. Resting in the background calming walls with geometric panels of pastel purple, gray and yellow soothingly wrap around toward the landscape just out doors. The space hints at a variety of stories and feeling of organization. We don't know where the ladder goes but there seems to be something more just out of view which the viewer can fill in. The golden barrel with stalks of corn bending in whimsical ways presents another layer of character to wonder about. Inspiration for this painting came about after salvaging my car and being without one for a while. In observing time without a car I started to consider the garage space as something new in terms of a subject for my painting. I can't say I ever gave my garage too much thought until then, but as I started to look at it with more intention little stories of my time here started to emerge and how we all leave footnotes in the places we have visited.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
