About The Artwork

We have a Judas tree in our garden. In late April it is a riot of colour. Bright pinks blaze against the blue skies of spring time. The painting, The Judas Tree, is a contemplation on betrayal. A betrayal of Nature in all its beauty, a betrayal of self and the magnificence of the individual. At the same time, the betrayal can be hidden if we wish to not acknowledge that, by simply not including the yellow joining piece when hung. You have a choice. It can send a message, or it can be purely decorative. There are options as to how this painting is hung. In the main picture, it’s shown containing the yellow joining piece. If the two canvases are butted up together, without the joining piece, the tree is complete. The painting can also be hung in a corner for a very different effect. This painting comes as three items: two canvases and a plywood joining piece with six screws. The joining piece is painted in phosphorescent yellow with a cracked finish and can be screwed to the back of the canvases.

Lewis works with ‘a beginner’s mind’, his work becoming more and more intuitive as time goes by. In drawing on his subconscious, he produces artworks that reflect feelings and concerns, both personal and planetary, in abstract and representational imagery. In deliberately not developing and building upon a recognizable technique, he stays ‘in the moment’ while striving for honesty on a personal journey of continuous discovery. This process yields an unpredictable variety of work that can be at times messy, sometimes ordered. In the early 1990s he spent many weekends with a community of artists at the home of the film director, Stanley Kubrick, who lived near him in the UK and whose wife, Christiane, is an accomplished artist. Here, he experimented with new methods and media, before setting up his own art studio. He has exhibited in New York, Marbella, Geneva, Vancouver, France, Switzerland and the UK. He owned and managed the Lewis Evans Art Studio and Gallery on Granville Island, Vancouver, Canada. He has written both fiction and non fiction titles. His 2011 novel, Hominine, is a timely geopolitical thriller that received critical acclaim. In 2021 he published Future Perfect Now - a highly personal daily journal, rich with emotional and philosophical detail that echoes his approach to his art.
