Oil, acrylic, ink and mixed media collage on canvas. This piece is part of my "Fauna & Flora" Series. In this series, I employ a hybrid form of painting, drawing and collage as a metaphor for the continual cycle of decay and regeneration in nature. Inspired by forest habitats surrounding the city where I live, I carefully build each work's history as layers of paint, hand-drawn and printed vintage ephemera, toile, Victorian weaving patterns, elements of Chinoiserie, barnacles, lichens, webs and other natural forms develop into an eclectic composition. Fauna and flora are protagonists interacting with what humans leave behind in the environment– ranging from a Louis XV chair to a muscle car or vintage radio. Paper scraps and fragments of what we leave behind as a civilization address the transience of our era. Old and new come together celebrating nature, memory and the cycle of life. Signed on back. Ships wired and ready to hang unframed, with framing recommendations included. Buyer may choose to frame it on their own if desired.

My work examines modernism and our relationship to nature throughout history. My decades-long interest in birds developed while observing birds owned by my grandfather, who was a bird breeder during an era when harboring birds in cages was popular. My oil paintings are faux-collages on canvas recreating the forms of torn vintage documents from various eras. Color, pattern and texture are layered like sedimentary rock from our collective history, with details such as intentional drips, marks and signs of age applied by hand. Birds are the protagonists, foraging what mankind has left behind. In my work the birds are free, telling a story with fragments from our past. Also included here are my collages and ink drawings on paper, done as studies for my larger oil paintings.
