Garoutte has a background in photography & interest in the medium of film and cinema, which is reflective in her paintings in the pre-occupation with light, shadow & dramatic cinematic imagery. Major influences which she attributes the aesthetic of her work include Canadian Post-Impressionism, The American Ashcan School, Canadian artist Alex Colville, British figurative artist Lucian Freud, Surrealist artist Rene Magritte, American artists Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Hopper & Grant Wood, as well as Canadian photographer Gregory Crewdson & film greats such as Alfred Hitchcock & Sergei Parajanov.
