About The Artwork

A micromosaic portrait of a woman made up of 24,000 cubic tiles 1/10" in size. The tiles are made from bio-plastic which is a waste product of bio-ethanol fuel production. The inspiration for this picture came from a woman who attended a specialist pain clinic with me, when we were trying to find a way to live with chronic pain. When I take or find a photo image that inspires me I decide how big a "canvas" I will need to give proper respect to the subject, then I sketch a simple line drawing in black to place the larger elements such as nose, ears etc. This sketch is placed on a light table so that I can work above it and start placing the micro mosaic tiles. Experience guides how I place colours to create the picture. I have a colour pallette of over 300 to draw from, though most subjects need approximately 100 shades to represent the play of light across the subject. Seen from very close distances the mosaic often appears to be a jumble of different colours, yet once you step back to view it from a more normal distance the subject is revealed in all its' glory. A micromosaic this size takes over 150 hours from inception to finished article.

Born originally in South Wales in the early 1960s, I moved to the glorious Chew Valley to the south of Bristol when I was just six months old, and there I have stayed ever since. Surrounded by countryside, yet just 20 minutes away from both Bristol and Bath, the Chew Valley has the best of all possible worlds. Painting and drawing have been hobbies all of my life, but following a life-chamging accident at work, my art has become so much more important to me. I take my inspiration from the landscapes around me and from a life-long passion for animals. I love the Arts & Crafts movement and much of my work in stained glass is inspired by Louis Tiffany.
